Poppy’s Story

Meet Poppy

Twelve-year-old Poppy is an extraordinary young carer to her fifteen-year-old brother, Jacob, who has a learning disability, sensory processing disorder and communication difficulties. Life at home can be complex, but Poppy is at the heart of it all.

She has an instinctive understanding of her brother’s needs. Poppy can sense when a meltdown is coming, and her calm, empathetic presence often settles him within moments. She recognises what needs to be done and when, demonstrating emotional intelligence and maturity far beyond her years.

On top of this, Poppy has taken on even more responsibility due to her mother’s recent health complications. She frequently steps in when Jacob becomes overwhelmed in public spaces, gently supporting him through sensory overload. This caring role does come at a cost. Poppy’s privacy is limited, and Jacob often seeks her out for sensory comfort or attention.

To celebrate Poppy’s incredible strength and spirit, we invited Poppy and her friend Jess to Lilleshall National Sports Centre to train with the elite Women’s Senior Artistic Gymnastics team through our Inspirational Experiences Programme.

Poppy and Jess were given a guided tour of Lilleshall National Sports Centre, including the Trampoline Training Hall. Then the girls met members of the women’s squad, including Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova, Abi Martin, Ruby Evans and many others, while collecting signatures along the way.

National Head Coach Martine George encouraged Poppy and Jess to join in with the team warm-up before taking part in a fun choreography session with artistry coach Nicole. After warming up, both girls took a particular liking to the tumble track, where Martine shared some top tips.

Truly magical and inspirational

Poppy’s mum told us: “The whole day gave Poppy the little hug of recognition we hoped it would. Meeting Abi, who has also been supported by the Foundation, really motivated her. She’s come away from the experience knowing that, despite her difficult home life, she can go on to achieve – and she will, I have no doubt. It was truly magical and inspirational, something both girls will remember for the rest of their lives. I mean, how many people can say they’ve been trained by the National Head Coach and her team? Not forgetting how lovely the whole squad was with them.”
